Acting PAO Teaches Youth Tolerance at Kankan American Corner

Participants posed for a souvenir photo with A/PAO Vallera Gibson (State Dept)

On August 1, 2012, Acting PAO Vallera Gibson introduced the film "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" to over 100 youth from various youth leadership and empowerment NGO projects as well as students from the University of Kankan. The screening which took place at the Kankan American Corner was followed by a one hour discussion on the film's portrayal of the women's peace movement which led to a peaceful resolution of their nation’s civil war.  The experience was rich and the conversations enlightening. A/PAO Vallera Gibson explained to the audience how events, issues and circumstances lead to misunderstanding and often tragic consequences, yet also how courage and tolerance can create a bridge for understanding and healing.  While explaining the inevitable differences that divide people, A/PAO Gibson also highlighted the commonalities that connect them. She engaged the students in a discussion designed to further their understanding of tolerance toward each other’s cultures while enhancing their English language skills.
