Public Affairs Officer Attends Rare Baga Dance
Public Affairs Office Andrew McLean visited the Baga village of Katako near Kamsar January 17, to learn more about the work of American Fulbright Scholar Dr. Frederick Lamp. Dr. Lamp has been studying the Baga people for nearly 25 years and has written the most authoritative book on the subject, "The Art of the Baga." During the visit, the villagers put on a rare performance of the "Dance of the D'mba", which centers on the famous D'mba mask. The mask has become a national symbol of Guinea. According to Dr. Lamp, it is unusual for the villagers to put on the performance for outsiders. In 2012 Dr. Lamp plans to stage an exhibition on the Baga at the Yale University Art Gallery, where he is the curator of African art.
