U.S. Citizen Birth Abroad

General Information

Children born outside the United States to at least one American citizen parent may be American citizens as well.  American citizens whose children are born in Guinea should report the birth of their child to the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Guinea in order to determine if their child meets the conditions for American citizenship.  Parents of American citizen children born in Guinea should obtain a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, which is evidence of the child's U.S. citizenship. Reports of Birth Abroad should be obtained as soon as possible after the birth of the child and cannot be issued after age eighteen. The issuance of the Consular Report of Birth Abroad requires that the parents of the child submit evidence of American citizenship and residency in the United States. For more information about the Consular Report of Birth Abroad please visit http://travel.state.gov/family/issues_birth.html.
