Workshops for Researchers on Good Governance and Democracy
From July 13-17 2009, Dr. Joseph Hellweg, an American Fulbright Lecturer/Researcher in the Department of Sociology at the University of Kankan, accompanied by 5 University of Kankan professors, led a seminar for a group of researchers on “Social Science Research Design and Methods on topics of Good Governance.” Fifteen researchers participated in this seminar, which was funded by Public Affairs Conakry and hosted at the offices of International Alert in Conakry.
During the week-long event, Dr. Hellweg and his team prepared the group to develop and carryout in-depth research projects on topics ranging for management of mining resources to addressing the challenges faced by a multi-ethnic society. As part of their training, the group held a session at the U.S. Embassy’s library, during which they learned about the resources available to them and the assistance the library staff can provide them in their research projects.
Participants were extremely appreciative of the high quality presentation made by Dr. Hellweg throughout the five days of seminar. They hope to continue to meet as a group to strengthen their research skills and plan to share the results of their work with their fellow researchers.
