Guinean Professor Bonata Dieng Gives Lecture on U.S. Slavery

Dr. Dieng Phone Call to Author
 Dr. Dieng speaks with
author Terry Alford
Dr. Bonata Dieng, a researcher at the Fouta Museum in Labe, Guinea, led a discussion on U.S. author Terry Alford's book, "Prince Among Slaves (1977)," at the American Cultural Center in Conakry on February 15, 2005.  Dr. Dieng summarized Alford's historical account of an African noble, Ibraihima Abdourahmane Barry, who was taken from the territory of present-day Guinea in the 19th century, sold into slavery in the American South, freed after 40 years, and returned to Africa.  Following the discussion, the American Cultural Center arranged for a telephone conference with the author in the United States.  With the assistance of a translator, Dr. Dieng was able to converse directly with Terry Alford.
