Remarks for U.S. Embassy’s Fourth of July Reception

On Thursday, July 2, 2009 the US Mission in Guinea commemorated the 223rd Birthday of the United States of America at the Chancery in Koloma. Among the over 200 guests present, were representatives of the Government of Guinea, the diplomatic corps, International Institutions, civil society, political parties and religious leaders.
In a substantial speech, the Chargé d’Affaires Kent Brokenshire expressed grave concern over the illegitimate seizure of power by a military junta (the CNDD) in Guinea and subsequent human rights abuses.  The Chargé called on the CNDD to hold elections as soon as possible and reiterated the United States' willingness to support the democratic process financially.  [Link to Chargé's speech].  The turnout for this Independence Day exceeded all expectations and many attendees were grateful for the chance to participate in the event and for the strong stance of the United States in favor of elections.
