Fulbright Scholar performs at the Ambassador’s residence

Ambassador with officials from the ministry of culture (State Dept)

Dr. Janice Haworth discussed her experiences as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar assigned to the Institut Supérieur des Arts de Guinée, followed by a rousing performance of traditional drumming, at the home of U.S. Ambassador Patricia Moller on June 21 for a group of 70 guests, including diplomats, ambassadors, ministers, academics, artists, and musicians.  After two years in Guinea researching, teaching and learning to play the native Djembe drum, Dr. Haworth has developed a solution for preserving these rhythms.  After welcoming her guests, Ambassador Moller noted that “African drum beats have typically proven difficult to record using traditional musical notation.  Dr. Haworth’s goal was to find a way to preserve the rhythms and exchange them with other cultures.”
