Embassy Hosts Iftaars in Conakry and Kankan

Guests of the Conakry Iftaar perform the traditional prayer before breaking their fast.

The Chargé d'Affaires hosted an Iftaar, organized by PAS, at the Ambassador's Residence in Conakry attended by more than 100 guests.  The PAO hosted an Iftaar dinner three days later at the University of Kankan attended by 50 people.  Both events were extremely well received by all invitees and enhanced the already strong ties between the Embassy and religious, cultural and governmental institutions in Guinea.

The Iftaar dinner in Conakry included religious leaders from multiple faiths, government and cultural leaders, and Embassy employees.  Participants began with the customary prayer in a specially prepared area at the residence before breaking fast, and then shared traditional foods with the Embassy community.

The Public Affairs Officer hosted another Iftaar dinner in Kankan on the campus of the University of Kankan that was attended by 50 community leaders from the region.  This was a great opportunity for the Embassy to reinforce the already strong partnership with the University, which also hosts an American Corner.

Both events promoted the Department's goal of religious tolerance while serving as an opportunity to underline the common culture of tolerance and respect for different beliefs in the United States and Guinea. The Conakry event was the second in two years and continues to show the Mission's commitment to active engagement with the Guinean people. The Kankan Iftaar was the first of its kind and, like the Conakry event, was warmly received by the participants.
