Weeklong Program Highlights the Role of Youth in a Democratic Society

From July 17-21, the U.S. Embassy hosted Douglas Yates, professor of political science at the American University of Paris, who spoke to a variety of audiences on youth engagement in the political process.  Throughout the week, political party leaders, youth members of political parties, youth activists, student government leaders and educators discussed how to promote youth engagement and overcome obstacles that prevent meaningful involvement in the political process.

By sharing his experience both as a youth activist and political science professor, Yates was able to provide a theoretical framework for political engagement, as well as practical advice as to how to engage in a positive, non-violent way to create political change.   He also provided examples from across the world of how non-violent engagement is what has led to the most profound and lasting change.

A common theme throughout the week-long session was the need for civic education, both formal and informal.  Yates emphasized that democracy is more than elections; it is a system of values that one generally acquires as a young person.  By teaching youth about their rights and responsibilities as citizens in a democracy, as adults they will serve to strengthen Guinea’s democracy.
