Film Presentation in Support of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Rights
Post hosted a film screening of "Dakan" as a vehicle to draw attention to and encourage discussion of human rights, specifically the rights of LGBT Guineans in their country where homosexuality is a provocative subject. Set in Guinea, “Dakan” is a story of forbidden love between two young men, and the first West African film to explore homosexuality. Acting Public Officer Vallera Gibson welcomed the participants and shared the recent declarations of both the American President and Secretary of State on the subject. The film’s Director, Mohamed Camara, and two of the actors were guest presenters and they gave their reasons for making the movie as well as encouraging debate around taboos. Mr. Camara stated that “I think no matter what the problem is if there is no way to discuss it openly, it will get worse. I made this film so that there would be an open discussion, so that people may begin to discuss among themselves and that the entire community may gain from it.”
