2008 Warden Information

Consular Warden Message

U.S. Embassy Conakry
January 4, 2008

The U.S. Embassy in Conakry has learned that there have been civil disturbances near the airport, between Hamdallaye and Bambeto circles, and in the Matoto area of Conakry.  Reports include rock throwing and soldiers firing in the air.  Many businesses downtown are closed.

Americans are encouraged to avoid any unnecessary travel within Conakry.  Americans should avoid large gatherings, as large, peaceful crowds could easily become unruly.
While there is no cause for immediate concern, Americans are strongly encouraged to have a reserve of food and drinking water to last at least two weeks.  Personal vehicles should be in good working condition.  Ensure that your vehicle’s gas tank is kept full.  Keep medical supplies, candles, flashlights, and batteries in stock and readily accessible.

Communication is important during emergency situations, and Americans are strongly encouraged to carry cell phones at all times.

For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings, and other Public Announcements can be found. Up to date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and Canada, or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

Americans living or traveling in Guinea are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Guinea. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the U.S. Embassy in Conakry.  By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.  The U.S. Embassy located on the Transversale No. 2, Centre Administratif de Koloma opposite the New Radio Station in Ratoma, Conakry, Guinea; telephone +224-30-42-08-61 through 68 or fax +224-30-42-08-71; email consularconakr@state.gov.
