2007 Warden Information

Consular Warden Message

U.S. Embassy Conakry
January 10, 2006

The U.S. Embassy in Conakry is issuing this Warden Message to inform Americans that due to the general strike on Wednesday, January 10, the U.S. Embassy will be operational with reduced staffing.   There is a potential for demonstrations during this period, which may include incidents of violence.  Americans and American facilities are not targets of the strike, but could be affected by unrest or disruptions.  Thus, official personnel not at work will be instructed to remain at stand fast at all residences.

The Guinean labor confederation has called for a general strike on Wednesday, January 10, throughout Guinea.  No end date for the general strike has been set at this time.

Americans are highly encouraged to adequately prepare in advance.  During the general strike, Americans should expect closure of many shops, gas stations and markets.  Use all security precautions and try to maintain at least a half tank of gas in your vehicle.  It is always prudent to ensure that you have food and water to last you at least three days in the event that stores are closed and other services are disrupted.

Americans should avoid unnecessary travel during a general strike. If you do go out, please remain alert to your surroundings and avoid crowds.  Remember even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence.

We will closely monitor the situation as events develop, particularly with regard to security conditions, and will issue additional notices as information becomes available.

For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings, and other Public Announcements can be found. Up to date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and Canada, or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

Americans living or traveling in Guinea are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Guinea. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the U.S. Embassy in Conakry.  By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.  The U.S. Embassy located on the Transversale No. 2, Centre Administratif de Koloma opposite the New Radio Station in Ratoma, Conakry, Guinea; telephone +224-30-42-08-61 through 68 or fax +224-30-42-08-71; email consularconakr@state.gov.
