2007 Warden Information
Consular Warden Message
U.S. Embassy Conakry
January 26, 2007
This warden message is being issued to alert American citizens that the
Department of State has authorized the voluntary departure of family
members of diplomatic personnel. Departure is voluntary on the part of
family members; it is not mandatory. This voluntary departure does not
concern diplomatic personnel, all of whom remain at post. The U.S.
Embassy remains open.
The general strike, now in its third week, turned violent in recent
days, and, despite ongoing negotiations, retains the potential for
further violence. The general strike has resulted in at least 59 deaths
in recent days. Demonstrations, rock-throwing, tire-burning, and
barricades have occurred in Conakry and in towns around the country.
Because of the continued unrest and violence, the Department of State
has authorized the voluntary departure of eligible family members of
employees of the U.S. Embassy in Conakry. Peace Corps volunteers are
conducting training in Mali; the Peace Corps office in Conakry is open.
American citizens are strongly urged to defer travel to Guinea until the
situation stabilizes. The U.S. Embassy is open. The airport remains
open, and airlines continue to service Guinea.
For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should
regularly monitor the Department's Internet web site at
http://travel.state.gov where the current
Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings, and other Public
Announcements can be found. Up to date information on security can also
be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and
Canada, or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular

to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal
holidays).

through the State Department's travel registration website,
https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain updated
information on travel and security within Guinea. Americans without
