2007 Warden Information

Consular Warden Message

U.S. Embassy Conakry
January 31, 2007

This warden message is being issued to alert American citizens that the general strike has been suspended. An agreement was signed late January 27 between labor unions and the Guinean government. The U.S. Embassy is open with full services.

The unions have reserved the right to renew the general strike if they are not satisfied that the government is implementing the signed agreement. The security situation in Guinea remains volatile and retains the potential for further violence.

Department of State has authorized the voluntary departure of family members of U.S. employees. Departure is voluntary on the part of family members; it is not mandatory. The authorized voluntary departure does not cover employees, who will remain at post.

Peace Corps volunteers are conducting training in Mali; the Peace Corps office in Conakry is open. The Travel Warning in place for Guinea suggests that American citizens defer non-essential travel to Guinea until the situation stabilizes. The airport remains open, and airlines continue to service Guinea.

The general strike resulted in at least 59 deaths. Demonstrations, rock-throwing, tire-burning, and barricades occurred in Conakry and in towns around the country.

For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings, and other Public Announcements can be found. Up to date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and Canada, or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

Americans in Guinea are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Guinea. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the U.S. Embassy in Conakry.  By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.  The U.S. Embassy located on the Transversale No. 2, Centre Administratif de Koloma opposite the New Radio Station in Ratoma, Conakry, Guinea; telephone +224-30-42-08-62 through 68 or fax +224-30-42-08-71; email consularconakr@state.gov.
