2007 Warden Information

Consular Warden Message #1

U.S. Embassy Conakry
February 10, 2007

This warden message is being issued to update the message issued Friday, February 9th. Last night, President Conte issued a decree naming a new Prime Minister. While the appointment fulfills a key demand of the unions, early indications are that the choice may not satisfy the unions, civil society groups and the population at large. While there has been no formal resumption of the strike at this point, there were street protests in various sections of Conakry overnight, including rock throwing, tire burning and barricades. These have continued and grown in some cases this morning, taking place in Hamdallaye, Bambeto, Taouyah, and Donka. These follow serious disturbances Friday in Dinguiraye and Coyah.

Embassy employees are currently on stand-fast and remaining at their residences until such time as the security situation eases. American citizens should not travel about unless it is essential, and should exercise all possible caution before making any decision to leave their homes today. They should be alert to their surroundings and avoid crowds and demonstrations. The security situation is volatile.

For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov <http://travel.state.gov/> where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings, and other Public Announcements can be found. Up to date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and Canada, or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

Americans in Guinea are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy through the State Department's travel registration web site, https://travelregistration.state.gov, and to obtain updated information on travel and security within Guinea. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the U.S. Embassy in Conakry. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency. The U.S. Embassy located on the Transversale No. 2, Centre Administratif de Koloma opposite the New Radio Station in Ratoma, Conakry, Guinea; telephone +224-30-42-08-62 through 68 or fax +224-30-42-08-71; email consularconakr@state.gov.
