2007 Warden Information
Consular Warden Message
U.S. Embassy Conakry
February 26, 2007
This warden message is being issued to inform American citizens of some progress made to resolve the political impasse in Guinea. In a press conference February 25, an ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) delegation led by former Nigerian President Babangida announced that President Conte would appoint a new, consensus Prime Minister by March 2. As a result, the unions have agreed to suspend their strike, beginning at midnight tonight, February 26. This development does not change the Department of State’s recommendation that American citizens should leave Guinea. Family members of Embassy employees will remain on ordered departure until at least March 26.
Travelers should be aware of the potential for post-election violence and other security concerns in Dakar, Senegal, which has prompted the Department of State to issue a Public Announcement for Senegal (http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_3124.html). At this time, we do not/not recommend that American citizens travel from Guinea to Senegal. Those wishing to depart Guinea should seek other destinations as the U.S. Embassy in Dakar may not be able to provide consular assistance or guarantee the safety of those arriving at this time. If you must travel to Senegal at this time, before doing so please visit http://usembassy.state.gov/dakar for more information.
The Embassy in Conakry, Guinea remains open. Visa services will resume on Wednesday, February 28, if the strike remains suspended.
The consular section will be open for American citizen services on Tuesday, February 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Once visa services resume, and until further notice, the 12 noon to 4 p.m. time period will be reserved for Americans. Americans without valid U.S. passports are strongly urged to renew their passports immediately.
