2006 Warden Information
Consular Warden Message
U.S. Embassy Conakry
June 7, 2006
The U.S. Embassy in Conakry is issuing this Warden Message to inform Americans that two main unions have called for a general strike throughout Guinea Thursday, June 8, 2006. Americans should expect closure of many shops, gas stations and markets. The unions have not set a date to end the strike; they have declared that the strike will continue until their demands are met.
Although not planned, demonstrations may develop in Bambeto and Hamdallaye Circle. Kipe and Taouyah are also areas that have attracted disruptions during similar events in the past.
Americans should avoid unnecessary travel while the strike is in effect. If you do go out, please remain alert to your surroundings and avoid crowds. Remember even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. Use all security precautions, and try to maintain at least a half tank of gas in your vehicle. It is always prudent to ensure that you have water and consumables to last you at least three days in the event that food establishments are closed or disruption of services are caused for an indeterminate period of time, although not expected at this time.
We will closely monitor the situation as the strike develops, particularly with regard to security conditions, and will issue additional notices as information becomes available.
For the latest security information, Americans should regularly monitor the Department’s Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings and Public Announcements can be found. For additional information on travel to Guinea, see the Consular's information sheet on Guinea.
The Department of State urges American citizens to take responsibility for their own personal security while traveling overseas.
