2006 Warden Information

Consular Warden Message

U.S. Embassy Conakry

June 12, 2006

The U.S. Embassy in Conakry is issuing this Warden Message to inform Americans that there are reports of rock throwing and tire burning by local students in the areas of Miniere, Taouyah, Ratoma, and Matoto, as a result of the general strike.  Local police have responded to the violent protests by reportedly firing shots and throwing tear gas at demonstrators.  The U.S. Embassy is encouraging all Americans to avoid travel until further notice.

Please keep in mind that the unions have not set a date to end the strike; they have declared that the strike will continue until their demands are met.  Other violent demonstrations and protests by students, union workers, or private sector workers may escalate and continue to develop throughout the week.

Americans should use all security precautions, and try to maintain at least a half tank of gas in your vehicle.  It is always prudent to ensure that you have water and consumables to last you at least three days in the event that food establishments are closed or disruption of services are caused for an indeterminate period of time.

We will closely monitor the situation as the strike develops, particularly with regard to security conditions, and will issue additional notices as information becomes available.

For the latest security information, Americans should regularly monitor the Department’s Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings and Public Announcements can be found.  Americans can also access the U.S. Embassy in Conakry’s Consular Section via telephone +224-30-420-981/2/3; email consularconakr@state.gov; or internet at http://conakrysntse.conakry.state.gov/consular_section.htm.
