2009 Warden Message

U.S. Embassy Conakry
Warden Message

October 16, 2009

The Department of State strongly urges all U.S. citizens to depart Guinea at this time.  The diplomatic missions of several other nations, including France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Lebanon have issued similar departure recommendations to their citizens.  Non-emergency Embassy personnel and all Embassy staff dependents have already departed Guinea.  The Embassy is further drawing down its staffing to just a few remaining U.S. personnel.

The political situation in Guinea remains highly volatile.  Although the country has been relatively calm since October 5, the potential for violence remains high.  International pressure on the National Council for Democracy and Development (CNDD) is mounting.  Guineans are calling for the CNDD to step down from power, but the CNDD has indicated that it does not intend to do so.  Security is not assured.

The Embassy remains closed until further notice, but is open for emergency American citizen services.  If you require assistance departing the country, please contact the Embassy.

If you have questions or concerns about safety or related issues, you are encouraged to contact the consular section at the Embassy.  During normal business hours--Monday through Thursday 07:30 to 16:30, Friday 07:30 to 13:30--you can call the Embassy switchboard at 65-10-4000, or, to reach the consular section directly, call 67-10-4444.  After hours, please call 67-10-4311.  Inquiries or information transmitted by email to the consular section of the Embassy at our new email address ConsularConakr@state.gov will be read the morning of the next business day.

For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs internet web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Alerts, and Travel Warnings can be found.  The Travel Warning for Guinea is available at http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_3122.html.

The U.S. Embassy is located on the Transversale No. 2, Centre Administratif de Koloma, opposite the new RPG radio station in Ratoma, Conakry, Guinea.  The U.S. Embassy website is http://conakry.usembassy.gov/index.html
